THE MUSIC LIFE OF GIORGIO OCCHIPINTI

Improvisation and composition are the opposing shores of an iridescent and infinite ocean with complex and irrepressible coastlines. The global nature of the Art of Music is a way of pushing the creative concept - a philosophical, political and idealistic concept too - into the realms of artistic universes without boundaries, where the soul is entwined with sound and its actuation in free and transitory organization, or in its written and perennially documented form. Circular thought, the idea of "infinite transfer", is intrinsic to this notion of Art, specifically to that of Global Music. The physical idea of this creative concept may be perceived in the rigorous and organized strength of my compositions; it is particularly evident in the contrast - not musical and artistic, but sound based - between the dreamy and fluttering sequences for two cellos and the sparkling yet dramatic dances for nonetto. The foundation, the vital impetus that has driven me to making these compositions are the contro - a yearned for, asserted and idealized encounter between the edges of art (standing for the parsimonious opening of intellectual faculties, oppressed by years of stylistic control), the total fusion of processed sound and a concretization of the idea of Globality and Creativity and Circular Impulse. This recording, made in March 2000 in a Sicilian farmhouse, isolated on an island, on a strip of land between Ragusa and Syracuse, is a testament to this utopian journey, a journey that is evident for being concrete. It came into existence among the smells of orange blossom and lowing cattle, dry stone walls impregnated with the slow wrinkles of time and with peasant history and endless sleepless nights when the isolation of body and soul fostered the desire to breathe life into sounds and visions, into my "Solitary and Isolated" idea of Art. This idea, developed through years of human struggle and fervour, now seeks to live without exceptions, without limitations, like an Island without shores, an unbounded yet sweet imprisonment for those of us who are under the spell of Sicily, inspiring muse and persuasive island, from where my Global Music makes a fleeing return, and, like me, lives on inside.

BIOGRAPHY

GIORGIO OCCHIPINTI Pianist and composer, was born in Ragusa on 12 June 1969. Since his childhood he devoted himself to the study of piano and playing the drum and flute through the band of San Giorgio di Ragusa in the period from 1974 to 1989. Around the 80's he took part in many exhibitions organized by G. M. I., Amici della Musica, Municipalities and Provinces, music schools (e. g. The Pentagram in Ragusa), etc.. and at the same time began private studies based on improvisation (from jazz to avant-garde) contemplating various forms of jazz. He studied composition and harmony (especially focusing on Shoenberg's treatise on harmony and dodecaphony, listening guided by ancient music, classical music and ending in contemporary music and jazz. In October 1989 he took part in the Paris Jazz Festival during the "International Jazz Piano Competition" dedicated to Martial Solal. The same year he was invited by the saxophone player Lee Konitz, one of the world's greatest jazz musicians to do a Sicilian tour (including the Brass Group festival of Catania in which the concert was recorded live) and a festival in Salerno in 1990. He worked with actress Lidya Alfonsi, and composed the soundtrack for some of her recitals. He has been a member and leader of some historical Italian and foreign jazz bands: first of all the December Thirty Jazz Trio, founded in 1989 together with the double bassist Giuseppe Guarrella and drummer Francesco Branciamore. From January 1992 until May 2000 he was a member of one of the most important Italian groups: the Pino Minafra Sud Ensemble, voted several times in referendum by the Italian and international critics at the top of the charts as the best group and the best recording on CD (Top Jazz Magazine "Musica Jazz" and in France the CD "Sudori" in 1996 best CD of the year). In 1993 he founded the Festival Ibleo del Jazz "... a sort of general state of avant-garde jazz music seen from the South" (as the critic F. Versienti writes in the daily newspaper Il Manifesto) and he is its artistic director. In the same year he created the first group of which he is leader, pianist and composer, the Giorgio Occhipinti Hereo Nonetto. With this group he recorded the cd "The Kaos Legend" produced by the Russian Leo Feigin (BBC) for the label Leo Records and today it has become a cult album for musicians and music listeners. In 1994 took part in an innovative group with the Roman saxophonist Eugenio Colombo and Giuseppe Guarrella: the Triple Project. In 1995 it was voted by Italian critics in the referendum "Top Jazz" held by the magazine Musica Jazz as the second new and best talent of the year. Also in 1995 he founded the European Duo with the French double bassist Joelle Léandre, musician and composer of great importance for contemporary music (written for her by Luigi Nono, Giacinto Scelsi, etc...) and for jazz and improvised, avant-garde world music. One of the columns the new creative music born in Europe in the 70's and 80's. In 1999 he founded the Duet Sequences with the clarinettist Olivia Bignardi. Also in 1999 the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Italians Composers, published by Pagano Editori, inserts its name together with the great names of the Contemporary music such as Luciano Berio, Giacinto Scelsi, Luigi Nono and others. In the September 1999 is called to join the Faust Group project with Miriam Palma, Maurizio Maiorana, Domenico Sciajno and Lelio Giannetto who creates with improvisation traced the soundtracks of the silent films of the 20/30s. The cd "Global Music and Circular Thought" (Giorgio Occhipinti Hereo Nonetto - engraved for the Belgian record company Jazz HALO Tonesetters) for the UK magazine "Jazz Rewiews" is the best CD of 2001. In the 2001 was called by one of the most important Italian actresses, Galatea Ranzi (many films such as the Oscar "La Grande Bellezza" by Paolo Sorrentino and a lot of theatre worldwide) for the project dedicated to Dante Alighieri and named for the note "Concerto Dantesco" directed by Marco Andriolo.
